A NOTE FROM IRON & STEEL RUN DIRECTOR "SPOCK"
A note about large flag displays.
The Iron and Steel Team does not wish to discourage anyone from showing their patriotism by displaying flags on their motorcycles. However, this is a 1000 mile interstate run, conducted primarily at interstate speeds. Though small flags seem to hold up pretty well to interstate speeds, large flags tend to get shredded fairly quickly. As large flag displays can be problematic at interstate speeds, we're asking folks to roll them up for the bulk of the ride.
On days 3 and 4 it is absolutely imperative that we get clear of Charlotte and Atlanta respectively before rush hour in either city.
Therefore we ask that you keep the flags rolled up on day 3 until we're clear of Charlotte. We're working in a non-stop just inside the SC state line to pick up our escort, from there we can slow things down a bit for the 39 miles into Spartanburg, folks can unroll large flags there. We've got a lot of folks interested in helping us make a display of our arrival who will be joining us there.
Similarly on day 4, we're asking folks to keep the large flag displays rolled up until we're clear of Atlanta. We have a food/fuel stop planned in Newnan GA, the last leg to Columbus is 72 miles. I-185 is fairly lightly traffic, again we can slow things down a bit and folks can unroll the flags for our arrival at the National Infantry Museum, Fort Benning.
A note about riding in southern heat and weather.
For those unfamiliar with our weather in the deep south and Georgia in September, it is seriously hot. Generally in the 90's with humidity to match. Along with sunblock, you'll want to bring a light colored cotton long sleeve shirt to keep the sun off of you. Drink plenty of water and keep caffeine and alcohol intake to a minimum while on the road, to keep the chance of dehydration to a minimum.
September is also the peak of hurricane season. Raingear is a must. Often even without storms or weather fronts approaching, we have afternoon "pop up" showers, created by the heating of the day. This is a 1000 mile run, it is not at all difficult to see that we could run into all sorts of weather. Be prepared.
